Gweek Cornwall

Gweek Cornwall

Home to the famous seal sanctuary Gweek Cornwall is a pretty little village to visit. For such a small village the facilities are good with a dog friendly pub serving food and a shop stocking a wide range of provisions. The Helford river is tidal up to Gweek and so Gweek Cornwall is viewed at its best at high tide.

Gweek is only a small village and does not take very long to look around, it is a good place to stop off for lunch, a picnic or break as you explore the Lizard Peninsula.

Sitting at the head of the Helford river Gweek is surrounded by beautiful countryside and walking in the area is good.

Gweek used to be a busy port serving the local tin mining district and then served as the harbour for the inland town of Helston. Being situated 6 miles inland from the sea along the Helford river Gweek Gweek Cornwallwas well protected from the threat of piracy and hence the perfect position for a port. Today, although quieter, the quay and boat yard are still busy.

The seal sanctuary is situated in Gweek beside the Helford Estuary. The National Seal Sanctuary Cornwall is a dog friendly attraction (well behaved dogs on leads welcome) and an interesting place to visit. The aim is to rescue and release seals back into the wild, but they do have some resident seals who can be seen and the rescued seals can be seen at the various stages of their rehabilitation. There are also otters and the new edition of penguins. There is also a nice woodland walk to enjoy. Information points are scattered about the sanctuary and puzzles for children. There are a couple of places to get food and drink in the seal sanctuary and also plenty of places to sit and enjoy your own picnic. There is plenty of free parking but an admission fee is charged to enter the seal sanctuary Cornwall. If you are going to visit the sanctuary I would suggest you park here and walk into the village before or after your visit as parking in the village is scarce.

Gweek lies on the Lizard Peninsula. Nearby villages on the Lizard to visit are Lizard village itself and the pretty harbours of Cadgwith and Coverack known for the Seal Sanctuary
