The Jamaica Inn Cornwall

The Jamaica Inn Cornwall

The Jamaica Inn, which is open all year round, is found high up on the wild and beautiful Bodmin Moor and is an excellent place to stay in one of the 20 newly refurbished en-suite bedrooms or to stop off for a tasty meal in the award winning restaurant, a drink or bar meal in one of the ‘olde worlde’ bars with great local ales and wines or simply for a relaxing coffee or even a cream tea!

This historic coaching house has been welcoming travellers crossing Bodmin Moor for nearly 300 years and is full of legend, mystery and romance.  The Inn was made world-famous by Daphne du Maurier's book The Jamaica Inn, a tale of smugglers, rogues and pirates turned into a film by Alfred Hitchcock starring Charles Laughton and Maureen O'Hara and more recently in 2014 made into a BBC drama.

For those of you not easily spooked the Jamaica Inn holds regular Ghost Hunting events and weekends where you may get to experience the presence of the friendly spirits reportedly living there.  Not for the faint hearted though as they have recently been awarded the Stamp of Approval from the British Paranormal Association for being a genuine haunted establishment! Or try one of their Murder Mystery Nights.

For years there have been stories of happenings at the Inn.  Many people who have stayed have reported strange incidents occurring at night. Popular TV programme ‘Most Haunted’ featured Jamaica Inn in what they said was one of the spookiest episodes they had ever recorded!  The Ghost Society have made in-depth investigations and compiled a report based on their findings. The areas of substantial interest to the investigation were, The Smugglers’ Bar, The Stable Bar (now the museum), upstairs in the old bedrooms and the old generator room that is now the hotel reception. If you are brave enough, join in one of the ghost hunts – but be warned this is not for the faint hearted!
